Some highlights:
Among the intersections of CANON science and engineering goals, environmental conditions directed this experiment toward intelligent sample acquisition while patch-tracking. Weak, directionally variable wind forcing and boundary current dynamics precluded development of a strong upwelling front along the outer boundary of the upwelling shadow. Tethys confirmed the absence of an upwelling front during the second week and revealed apparent biological enhancement along a different type of front at the outer boundary of the upwelling shadow. R/V Martin surveys provided surface and water column data both from the northern upwelling shadow where Tethys monitored, and adjacent to the drifting WireWalker that Dorado tracked. Lagrangian coherent structure (LCS) maps provided the opportunity to evaluate relationships between fronts identified from surface circulation (HF radar) and fronts identified from other remote and in situ sensing.
During tracking experiments, the drifting WireWalker provided unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution of variability in the water column, which was tracked autonomously using Lagrangian volume surveys and peak capture algorithms on the Dorado AUV. These algorithms were important to detecting HAB variability during BloomEx 2010, and they were valuable tools in this experiment. The ODSS readily accommodated information from new moored and Lagrangian WireWalker platforms and provided efficient and effective means of tracking these Lagrangian experiments for situational awareness and planning.
